Abstract

India's journey towards women's empowerment has been marked by legislative and policy interventions aimed at addressing gender disparities and promoting equality. An integral part of this journey has been the establishment of committees and commissions dedicated to tackling the multifaceted challenges faced by women. Post-independence, India's quest for independence was intertwined with the struggle for gender equality and women's rights, as emphasized by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar.  The Constitution of India drafted post-independence, enshrined principles of gender equality and provided a framework for affirmative action to uplift women. Despite significant roles played by women throughout history, pervasive discrimination and limited access to resources have been persistent challenges. Various committees and commissions have been formed post-independence to promote women's empowerment. From the Committee on the Status of Women in India in 1974 to the establishment of the National Commission for Women in 1992, these initiatives aimed to address specific challenges faced by women, including legal, social, and economic issues. These committees and commissions have played a crucial role in shaping policies and legislation related to women's rights and empowerment. For instance, the recommendations of the National Commission for Women (NCW) have influenced amendments to laws concerning dowry, domestic violence, and sexual harassment. However, challenges such as limited enforcement mechanisms and bureaucratic hurdles persist, affecting the effectiveness of these initiatives. Continuous efforts are needed to overcome these challenges and ensure the meaningful implementation of their recommendations. In conclusion, committees and commissions have been instrumental in advancing women's empowerment in India. By fostering collaboration and commitment, India can further accelerate progress towards gender equality and women's empowerment.
