Abstract

Ideologists of the modern art movement gave the sculpture a prominent position because, along with posters and murals, it could be shown in public spaces, making it the most easily obtainable type of artistic expression. Some key differences can be seen between the French and Soviet approaches to sculpture education in China's universities. For starters, the Soviet Union had a unified teaching mode that was simple to introduce to China; second, there was a strong color of government act behind the introduction and promotion of Soviet-style sculpture teaching; third, China learned from the Soviet mode comprehensively and systematically by sending students to the Soviet Union and inviting experts from it; and fourth, the period of learning is extensive, spanning from the 1950s to the beginning of the 21st century. Several of the sculptors in New China was raised in institutions that adopted the Soviet approach to educating sculpture since it provided a comprehensive and effective curriculum.
