Reviving Tradition: Exploring Sustainable Practices In Kalamkari Art For Artisan Empowerment And Cultural Preservation

Abstract

The art of Kalamkari, with its intricate designs and natural dyeing processes, represents a significant cultural heritage of India. This research paper explores sustainable practices within Kalamkari art production, examining their potential for artisan empowerment and cultural preservation. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study combines qualitative interviews with artisans and quantitative environmental impact assessments to identify and analyze sustainable practices in the Kalamkari industry. Findings reveal that sustainable practices not only contribute to environmental conservation but also enhance the socio-economic status of Kalamkari artisans, fostering skill development, and ensuring the art form's transmission to future generations. The paper highlights the challenges artisans face, including market access and the preservation of traditional knowledge, while identifying opportunities for growth and sustainability. Through a comparative analysis with other traditional arts, the study suggests that integrating sustainable practices into Kalamkari can serve as a model for revitalizing traditional crafts worldwide. The research underscores the importance of policy support, education, and community engagement in promoting sustainability in traditional arts, suggesting pathways for the empowerment of artisans and the preservation of cultural heritage.
