An Empirical Study on the Relationship between School Size and Discipline in Secondary Education in Turkey

Abstract

The purpose of the study is, to examine how the number of disciplinary offenses changes according to school size, school type, and residence of school, and to make recommendations to those who are responsible for developing policy. In research, school size is determined in terms of the number of students. In this study, the survey research model was used. The data which were collected from 7230 secondary schools committed disciplinary offenses by Ministry of National Education in 2012-2013 academic year. The findings emerging from the study show that the average penalty per student in rural schools is lower than that of urban schools. On the other hand, the average number of penalties per student changes by type of schools. According to regression analysis in the study, the number of teachers, the number of students, and type of schools are related to the number of penalties per student. But the number of classrooms and place of schools aren’t statistically related to the number of penalties per student.
