Abstract

Satyajit Ray’s short stories present a distinctive and nuanced portrayal of extraterrestrial beings that goes far beyond conventional science fiction tropes. This paper offers an analytical study of the representation of alien life in Ray’s stories, particularly those associated with Professor Shonku and standalone narratives such as Bankubabur Bandhu. Rather than depicting extraterrestrials as hostile invaders, Ray humanises them, using their presence as a narrative device to explore ethical values, rational inquiry, cultural relativism, and the limitations of human perception.

The study reveals that Ray’s extraterrestrial characters often embody superior intelligence, moral clarity, and emotional restraint, thereby functioning as mirrors against which human ignorance, fear, and superstition are exposed. Through scientific reasoning and imaginative speculation, Ray blends fantasy with realism, encouraging readers to adopt a rational and open-minded approach to the unknown. His alien figures also challenge anthropocentric worldviews by suggesting the possibility of advanced civilisations governed by harmony and ethical balance.

Furthermore, the paper highlights how Ray employs the motif of extraterrestrial contact to critique social orthodoxy, blind belief, and irrational fear prevalent in human society. By presenting encounters between humans and beings from other planets in a calm, non-threatening manner, Ray transforms science fiction into a medium of philosophical reflection and humanistic thought. The study thus argues that Ray’s depiction of extraterrestrial life contributes significantly to Bengali science fiction by combining imagination with scientific temper and moral insight.
