Abstract

Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) are emerging key instruments to sharpen the quality of teaching and research, improve institutional capacity in dealing with regular or unanticipated adversities. Yet, in rural and semi-urban realities such as Kolhapur district (Maharashtra), the ROI on these programs — though humanised, participatory and context-sensitive tools of assessment — is still hidden from our common sense.

Objectives: In this study, an attempt was made to assess the ROI of FDPs conducted at three higher education institutions in Kolhapur; this effort comprised a blended methodological framework that embedded both quantitative metrics along descriptive perspectives. It tried to measure not just the financial returns, but also whether it made a difference in teaching and learning, engagement of communities, and contributions to institutions. Methods: Cognitive Faculties were assessed through pre- and post-FDP assessments, Ministry of Science and Technology performance indicators; Institutional data on publication outputs and community leadership roles were also validated using cognitive faculty interviews, focus group discussions. The direct and indirect benefits were incorporated in a composite index of ROI that was based upon the narratives provided by the stakeholders.

Results showed a composite ROI score of 142.6%, which is far above what these organizations have seen with institutional investment before. Learner-centred pedagogies improved teaching quality, research productivity in terms of quantity and relevance to local needs, and community engagement through workshops, stakeholder labs, and co-created projects. Faculty took on strategic functions too: in curriculum reform and advocacy, demonstrating a wider impact at the institutional level.

Conclusion: Ethically designed and locally tailored FDPs come with high-impact returns that greatly exceed conventional measures. The initiative challenges a new ROI to be measured under the relational, societal, and strategic dimensions, especially in emerging countries. These results provide a generalisable template for how FDPs can be evaluated and scaled in rigorous yet humanising ways within their institutions.
