Abstract

The study aims to understand user behaviour in selected special libraries of Delhi and provides critical insights into how well these institutions serve their communities. The author tried to understand user information needs, opinions on resource usefulness, usage of information sources, awareness of library services, the impact of technology on information access, and user problems of the users of selected special libraries in Delhi. By understanding user needs, preferences, and challenges, libraries can adapt their services, enhance user experiences, and ultimately fulfil their mission of supporting research and information access. Based on the importance and relevance of the institutions and information in their libraries, nine institutes have been selected for the present study. In this study, we used the survey method, where N= 424 and data was analysed with Excel and Spreadsheet. Most respondents have visited libraries for over five years, mainly for research and academic purposes. Scholars and teachers prefer electronic resources. Users are familiar with library services, including photocopying and internet access. They engage with printed materials and online databases and find libraries valuable for pursuing research and academic goals. Respondentias also found that libraries helped pursue research and scholarly pursuits, and users found it easy to find necessary information and documents. All services offered by Special Libraries are considered good, practical, and relevant for their users.

At the end of this study, we also suggested some recommendations for further studies. Future research could further explore longitudinal trends in user behaviour, incorporating changing technology and societal norms to continuously align library services with user expectations.
