The Image of Teacher in Turkish Movies with the Theme of Education: A Historical Look to Teacher Image

Abstract

This study aims to determine the image of teacher in Turkish films that have been shot between since the last years of Ottoman Empire till today. The study’s design is document analysis which is one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consists of a total of 5 films, one film for every 20 years, between the years 1910 and 2010. The documentary method was used to gather the data and the research data were collected through observation form developed by the researchers. Firstly, observation forms were decoded and analyses were carried out in the analysis process. Basic points that reflected the image of teachers were determined and supported using direct quotes from positive - negative image elements, film frames and dialogues spoken in films. According to results obtained from the study, teachers can be said to have a visually appealing image. At the same time teachers are idealist people advancing towards specific goals and devoting themselves to these goals. On the other hand, that teachers are spotted smoking a cigarette, give punishments, remain desperate to events and their way of speaking has been spoiled over time can be regarded as examples of negative image.
