Awareness of Dyslexia in Higher Education: Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity

Abstract

Dyslexia is a kind of learning disorder highlighted by difficulty in reading, writing and spelling poses important obstacles for students studying higher education. Developing diversity and cultivating inclusiveness in academic environments requires recognizing and addressing the needs of students with dyslexia. Research in this sector frequently originates from neuropsychological views and disregards the ideas of students. The objective of this study was to get insight into the educational experiences of individuals with dyslexia throughout their lives and compare the same with academic staff awareness as previously documented in other research. In this theoretical analysis involving twenty participants, transcripts were analysed using qualitative methods. Five themes for students and three themes for staffs were discerned for the analysis underscored the many difficulties that students encounter during their educational journey. Research indicates that higher education institutions should enhance their efficacy in establishing an inclusive learning environment that provides assistance for this marginalised demographic. This will help to decrease the social and emotional obstacles that hinder learning and educational achievement for this dyslexia students.
