Library Web Portal And Changing Role Of Librarian

Abstract

Information technology is changing rapidly, which creates new challenges as well as opportunities. Librarians are also a part of this change, shifting from information gatekeeper to the new challenging role in the knowledge society which combines information management with the information, communication and technology to deal with the adoption of internet, world wide web, online access, online resources, global networking, internet-based information services etc. It is now required that library professionals enrich them knowledge with the new and latest technologies to access, browse and retrieve the information from the global networks and manage & organize that information to their users.

Librarians must have the ability to deal with the library portal technology as it is the need of the hour. Librarians are now required to select, organize, and instruct their patrons on how to use and locate the resources available online and preserve that information. With the information revolution and extensive thinking everything is available on the internet, world wide web which creates the challenges to the traditional professional librarians. Librarians are now required to learn and apply new skills of negotiating license agreements, managing e-library, library portals, electronic resources etc. to acquire and provide dependable access to the online resources. In the research article librarian changing role in library web portal environment is discussed in detail along with the skills required by them to face the challenges.
