Abstract
This study investigates the socio-economic conditions of farmers in Tumkur, highlighting key demographic, educational, and economic factors impacting agricultural practices in the region. A survey of local farmers reveals that half of the respondents are aged between 25 and 44, suggesting a youthful demographic, though a significant gender imbalance exists, with 60% male participation. Educationally, 40% of farmers possess only secondary education, indicating a critical need for enhanced training programs. Farming remains the primary income source for 50% of participants, with 40% earning between ₹50,000 and ₹1,00,000 annually, pointing to economic vulnerabilities. The land tenure situation appears stable, with 70% of farmers owning their land, yet challenges persist, particularly in resource access and market integration. While 60% have embraced modern farming techniques, a notable 30% still adhere to traditional practices, underscoring a transition period within the sector. The study advocates for targeted educational initiatives, improved access to microfinance, the establishment of cooperatives, and investments in rural infrastructure. Additionally, empowering female farmers is essential for equitable growth. Ultimately, the research concludes that sustainable development in Tumkur's agricultural sector requires addressing these socio-economic disparities and fostering an inclusive approach to modernization.
