Abstract

The mythological figure of Sita, the central female character in the epic Ramayana, has long captivated scholars and artists alike. However, traditional interpretations of Sita often portray her as a passive and submissive figure, overshadowed by the actions of her husband, Rama. This paper seeks to critically appraise the reimagining of Sita, particularly in contemporary literature, art, and cultural discourse. Drawing upon a range of sources including literary texts, visual representations, and cultural narratives, this study examines how modern reinterpretations have challenged and subverted traditional depictions of Sita. Through the lens of feminist theory, postcolonial discourse, and cultural studies, we analyze the ways in which Sita has been reconstructed as a symbol of empowerment, agency, and resilience.
Key themes explored in this appraisal include Sita’s agency in her own narrative, her relationship with Rama and other characters, her portrayal as a feminist icon, and her relevance in contemporary society. By engaging with diverse interpretations of Sita, this paper aims to shed light on the dynamic and evolving nature of mythological figures, as well as their enduring significance in shaping cultural identities and narratives.
