Abstract

Ecocriticism, an interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of literature and environmental studies, scrutinizes the representation and influence of nature and the environment in literary works. This review paper delves into the evolution, methodologies, and key themes of ecocriticism, highlighting its significance in contemporary literary criticism. The paper begins with an exploration of ecocriticism's origins, tracing its roots to the environmental movements of the late 20th century, and its establishment as a critical framework that challenges anthropocentric perspectives.

The analysis proceeds to examine various methodological approaches within ecocriticism, including deep ecology, ecofeminism, and postcolonial ecocriticism. These perspectives offer diverse insights into how literature portrays human-nature relationships, environmental degradation, and the cultural implications of ecological crises. By analyzing seminal texts from different literary traditions, the paper demonstrates how ecocritical readings reveal underlying environmental concerns and ethical considerations.

Furthermore, the paper discusses the role of ecocriticism in raising awareness about ecological issues and fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between humans and the natural world. Through the examination of both classic and contemporary literary works, the review underscores the transformative potential of ecocriticism in shaping environmental discourse and promoting sustainability.

This paper asserts that ecocriticism provides a vital lens for interpreting literature in the context of pressing environmental challenges. By bridging literary analysis and ecological awareness, ecocriticism not only enriches our understanding of literature but also contributes to broader efforts in environmental conservation and advocacy. The ongoing relevance of ecocriticism underscores its importance as a dynamic and impactful field within literary studies, offering critical insights that resonate beyond the realm of academia.
